What Is the Green Energy Program?
At Pacific PUD, we understand that many of our customers want to do more to support clean, renewable energy. That’s why we offer the Green Energy Program, which allows you to voluntarily purchase blocks of electricity generated from renewable resources like wind, solar, small hydro, and biomass.
When you participate, you aren’t just choosing cleaner power—you’re helping displace fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Your support sends a powerful message: our community values sustainability and a healthier planet.
How It Works
When you sign up, your purchase is matched with Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs). These RECs represent the environmental attributes of 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable electricity added to the grid. Even though all electricity mixes once it enters the grid and you can’t control where your power physically comes from, RECs let you claim that your electricity purchase supports clean, renewable generation.
Here’s how it breaks down:
- Renewable generators (like wind farms or solar arrays) produce two things:
- The electricity itself, which is delivered into the electric grid.
- A Renewable Energy Certificate, or REC, that verifies this electricity was generated from a renewable source.
- One REC is created for every 1,000 kWh of renewable electricity.
- When you purchase a REC, you’re ensuring that this clean energy was generated and added to the grid on your behalf.
- Once purchased, a REC is “retired”—meaning no one else can claim that green energy benefit. This prevents double-counting and protects the integrity of the program.
Why RECs Matter
Because the electrons from different energy sources are physically identical, it’s impossible to trace electricity from a wind turbine directly to your home. RECs solve this by labeling and verifying the clean origin of the energy.
They act as:
- A receipt for renewable electricity generation.
- A guarantee that your energy use helped fund clean power and displace fossil fuel generation.
- A tool for environmental accounting, ensuring each claim is accurate and traceable.
In short, RECs make renewable energy participation possible—even without installing solar panels or wind turbines on your property.
Our Commitment
Over 90% of the District’s power already comes from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), with a strong foundation in hydroelectric energy. As part of our continued support for renewable energy, the District also receives RECs from BPA and Grays Harbor PUD. This allows us to offer an accessible and meaningful way for customers to participate in green energy solutions.
This program is entirely voluntary and self-funded—meaning your contributions directly support the expansion of renewable energy in the Northwest.
